Aditya Birla Group has entered the wires and cables business with the launch of Ultravolt, a new venture housed under UltraTech Cement. The group plans to invest ₹1,800 crore in the business and aims to become one of the top two players in the segment within five years.
Ultravolt marks Aditya Birla Group's fourth new business foray in the past three years. At launch, the company said it would be the second-largest player in the wires segment by manufacturing capacity.
The move expands UltraTech's presence across the construction value chain, which currently includes grey cement, ready-mix concrete, building products and white cement. The new business will cater to demand from residential construction, commercial projects, industry, infrastructure and electrification.
The business will operate from a manufacturing facility at Jhagadia in Gujarat's Bharuch district. The company said the location would support distribution and logistics across markets in India.
Ultravolt plans to establish a nationwide distribution network covering more than one lakh retailers, over 5,000 UltraTech Building Solutions outlets, more than 500 districts and around 6,000 pin codes. The company also plans to operate through a network of more than 20 warehouses.
The initial product portfolio will include home wires, flexible wires and cables for residential, commercial, industrial and infrastructure applications. The company plans to subsequently expand into electrical accessories.
The business is also developing an electrician engagement and training programme focused on product knowledge, safety and installation standards. More than 1,600 electricians have been enrolled ahead of the launch, while the company aims to train over 40,000 electricians during the coming year under the Skill India programme in association with the Electronics Sector Skills Council of India (ESSCI).
The wires and cables business is expected to strengthen UltraTech's Building Solutions strategy as it expands its participation in India's construction, housing and infrastructure markets.
