BHEL Wins Rs 54 Billion Coal Gasification Order

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has secured a major order from Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited (BCGCL), a joint venture between BHEL and Coal India Limited, for the coal gasification and raw syngas cleaning package at a coal-to-ammonium nitrate project in Jharsuguda, Odisha.

The contract covers engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and performance guarantees for coal gasification and raw syngas cleaning facilities, which constitute the core process units of the integrated chemical complex. The scope of work includes the gasifier and associated auxiliaries, steam generation plant, air separation unit, coal and ash handling systems, and cooling tower facilities.

The order is valued at around Rs 54 billion, with BHEL responsible for complete design, engineering, equipment supply, civil works and erection. The company is expected to complete the project within four years and will also handle operations and maintenance for a period of five years.

The project is expected to play a key role in advancing India’s coal-to-chemicals ecosystem, strengthening domestic production of fertiliser intermediates and enhancing energy and industrial self-reliance.
