The Ministry of Mines has unveiled India’s first-ever State Mining Index to promote transparency, efficiency, and competitiveness across the mineral sector. The index is designed to benchmark the performance of states and union territories in mineral exploration, resource management, and policy implementation.
Developed by the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM), the index will assess states on parameters such as exploration output, auction process, environmental compliance, and revenue generation. It aims to encourage healthy competition among states while improving policy coordination and governance standards.
The initiative aligns with the Centre’s broader goal of driving reforms in the mining sector, enhancing ease of doing business, and supporting the nation’s vision for self-reliance in critical minerals and sustainable resource development.
