Haryana has secured a critical coal linkage from the Central government for the proposed 800 MW expansion at the Rajiv Gandhi Thermal Power Plant in Khedar, Hisar district, Energy Minister Anil Vij said on Wednesday. The allocation has been granted under the SHAKTI policy to ensure uninterrupted fuel supply for the upcoming unit.

Vij said the assured coal availability would accelerate the expansion project and strengthen Haryana’s power infrastructure amid steadily rising electricity demand. The Khedar plant remains one of the state’s core generation assets, and the additional unit is expected to significantly improve overall power supply once operational.

Under the arrangement, Haryana will be allotted a dedicated coal block to meet the long-term fuel needs of the expanded facility. The minister emphasised that reliable coal access is vital for maintaining stable generation and preventing operational disruptions caused by supply shortages.

He added that the expansion will help ensure consistent electricity supply to industries, farmers and households, stabilise tariffs and improve grid reliability. The state government, he said, is working towards a more self-reliant power sector capable of meeting future demand while keeping electricity affordable.

The coal linkage marks a major step in Haryana’s long-term energy strategy, particularly as states seek to balance renewable growth with dependable base-load capacity. Strengthening conventional generation, Vij noted, will complement broader efforts to enhance energy security and sustain economic growth.
