India Extends Deep-Sea Mineral Auction Deadline

India has extended the deadline for bids on 13 offshore deep-sea mineral blocks, according to the Ministry of Mines. The auction, launched in November, covers blocks containing essential minerals such as cobalt, copper, manganese, and nickel, crucial for electric vehicle batteries and clean energy technologies. Initially set to close on 27 February, the deadline was extended to 2 April and now to 1 May, following requests from companies for more time. Despite concerns over environmental impacts, including protests from Kerala fishermen, the government assures consultations with relevant departments. The auction is vital to India’s energy transition goals.
