L&T Wins Rs 25 Billion EPC Contract For Coal To Ammonium Nitrate Plant

Larsen & Toubro has secured an order worth more than Rs 25 billion to deliver an engineering, procurement and construction project to convert coal into ammonium nitrate at a facility in Odisha. The order was awarded to the Hydrocarbon business vertical of L&T Energy by a domestic client and is classified by the company as a significant order. The contract strengthens Larsen & Toubro's position in industrial and energy infrastructure delivery across heavy process sectors.

The scope covers full EPC delivery including detailed engineering, procurement of major equipment and materials, construction of process units and associated utilities and offsites required for ammonium nitrate production. Ammonium nitrate is a key input for industrial explosives used across mining, infrastructure and construction sectors and the project is expected to support rising domestic demand linked to mining and industrial activity, particularly in mineral rich states such as Odisha. The work will require integration of chemical processing, material handling and safety systems at scale.

L&T's Hydrocarbon business continues to execute projects across oil and gas, petrochemicals, fertilisers and other process industries, and the firm has set internal thresholds to classify orders. Contracts valued between Rs 10 billion and Rs 25 billion are treated as large orders while projects above Rs 25 billion fall under the significant category, under which this award has been recorded. The classification reflects the size, technical complexity and strategic importance of the work.

The development comes amid growing investment in industrial processing infrastructure as policymakers and firms seek to strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities for critical industrial chemicals and downstream products. The project is likely to contribute to supply chain resilience for explosive precursors used by the mining and construction industries and to support local industrial ecosystems through contracting and logistics activities. L&T's execution will focus on schedule, quality and compliance with applicable safety and environmental standards.
