Mining operations have commenced at the Deucha Pachami coal project in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, starting with overburden removal. The Rs 350 billion project is expected to generate one lakh jobs.
Officials, including the Birbhum District Magistrate and WBPDCL representatives, attended the ceremonial launch. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee confirmed the development at the Bengal Global Business Summit 2025.
The project faces challenges due to thick basalt rock layers, which must be removed before coal extraction. The first phase of clearing focuses on a 12-acre plot. The state also plans a coal gasification project for areas unsuitable for mining.
