Ministry of Coal to Hold Third Roadshow on Coal Gasification

The Ministry of Coal will organise the third roadshow on the Scheme for Promotion of Surface Coal and Lignite Gasification Projects in Mumbai on 18 June 2026, aiming to deepen stakeholder engagement and accelerate industry participation in India’s coal gasification mission. The Mumbai event follows earlier roadshows in New Delhi and Hyderabad and is intended to bring together industry stakeholders, investors, technology providers, policy experts, coal sector representatives, financial institutions and State government officials to deliberate on emerging opportunities.

The Union Minister of Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, will attend as chief guest, and the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, will attend as special guest. The Minister of State for Coal and Mines, Satish Chandra Dubey, and senior ministry officials including the Secretary, Vikram Dev Dutt, and the Additional Secretary, Sanoj Kumar Jha, are expected to be present and to engage with prospective developers and investors.

Coal gasification is described by the ministry as a key pillar of the strategy to strengthen energy security, reduce dependence on imported critical feedstocks and promote value addition to domestic coal resources. By converting coal into synthesis gas, commonly known as syngas, the process enables production of value-added outputs such as methanol, urea, ammonium nitrate, synthetic natural gas and other chemical feedstocks, thereby supporting downstream industries and import substitution.

The Government has approved a Rs 46,000 crore initiative, equivalent to Rs 460 billion (Rs 460 bn), to promote surface coal and lignite gasification projects and to accelerate their deployment across the country. The ministry has placed the Request for Proposal (RFP) in the public domain and invited comments from stakeholders as part of efforts to ensure broad-based participation, transparency and timely implementation that support industrial growth and energy self-reliance.
