State-owned miner NMDC has recently commenced coal mining operations at the Tokisud North Coal Mine in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand, marking its formal entry into the coal sector. The development represents a significant milestone in NMDC’s strategic diversification beyond iron ore and strengthens its operational footprint in eastern India.

The Tokisud North Coal Mine forms a key pillar of NMDC’s expansion strategy, complementing its established presence in iron ore, diamond mining and overseas gold projects. The addition of coal mining capacity is expected to augment domestic coal availability, support the power sector and reinforce India’s energy security in line with the Viksit Bharat vision.

NMDC’s diversification roadmap aligns with the national push for mineral self-reliance articulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Addressing the nation in August 2025, the Prime Minister highlighted the critical role of minerals in energy, industry, defence and technology, underlining the need for self-reliance through the National Critical Minerals Mission and large-scale exploration efforts across the country.

Emphasising the importance of diversification, Union Minister of Steel and Heavy Industries H. D. Kumaraswamy said NMDC must evolve from a single-mineral focus to a future-ready, strategically diversified mining company. He noted that expansion into coal, critical minerals and other strategic resources is essential for strengthening India’s resource security and long-term economic resilience.

The Tokisud North project also highlights NMDC’s capabilities in developing and operationalising large greenfield mining projects. The company has reiterated its commitment to high standards of safety, environmental management and community engagement, drawing on its legacy of responsible and sustainable mining practices.

Beyond energy security, the coal mine is expected to drive inclusive regional development in Jharkhand by generating employment, improving infrastructure and supporting socio-economic growth in surrounding areas, reinforcing NMDC’s role as a key contributor to national development through strategic mineral diversification.
