NMDC Mines Earn 5-Star Rating for Sustainable Practices

NMDC, India’s largest iron ore producer, has received the prestigious 5-Star Rating for four of its mines for the financial year 2023–24. The awarded mines include three located in the Bailadila region of Chhattisgarh—Deposits 14, 14 NMZ, and 5—and one in Kumaraswamy, Ballari district, Karnataka.

The recognition was presented by Union Minister of Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy in the presence of Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, during a felicitation ceremony jointly organised by the Ministry of Mines and the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM). Out of 1,200 operational mines in India, only 95 were conferred with the 5-Star Rating this year.

Representing NMDC at the ceremony were Shri M. Jayapal Reddy (Executive Director - RP), Shri Rabindra Narayan (Executive Director - Bacheli Complex), and Shri S. K. Kochar (GM - Kirandul Complex).

CMD Shri Amitava Mukherjee commented, “This honour affirms NMDC’s ongoing dedication to sustainability, innovation, and responsible mining. To be among only 95 awarded mines from over 1,200 is a proud moment reflecting our ESG leadership.”

The 5-Star Rating recognises excellence in mineral conservation, environmental management, scientific mining, and social responsibility. NMDC’s consistent accolades under this programme highlight its role in supporting India’s infrastructure and industrial goals, while adhering to global standards of environmental and social governance.
