Vedanta’s iron ore mining arm, Sesa Goa, on Thursday said it has saved nearly 8 million units of energy in FY25 and the current financial year to date through technology upgrades, smarter systems and in-house innovations. The company said the energy savings are sufficient to power more than 6,000 average Indian households for a year, highlighting its commitment to sustainable mining in line with India’s clean energy goals.

According to the company, a key contributor to the efficiency gains is its 65 MW waste heat recovery power plant, which converts heat generated from blast furnaces and coke oven flue gases into electricity. This has helped reduce dependence on grid power while strengthening circular economy practices across operations.

Vedanta Sesa Goa said it is accelerating energy conservation and clean energy initiatives, delivering measurable improvements in FY25 and FY26. With a mining legacy of over seven decades in Goa and a strong operational presence in Karnataka, the company said sustainability is being increasingly embedded into its core business processes.

The company is also scaling up renewable energy adoption, with a 100 kWp solar plant now operational at its value-added business unit. In addition, it has partially transitioned from diesel-powered wheel loaders to electric vehicle wheel loaders across mining and value-added operations, resulting in a reduction of around 50,000 litres of diesel consumption per unit each year.

Commenting on the progress, CEO Navin Jaju said the company’s initiatives — including electric wheel loaders, solar power, artificial intelligence, digitisation and in-house innovation — reflect Vedanta Sesa Goa’s focus on ESG excellence and its alignment with Vedanta Group’s net-zero targets for 2050. He added that these measures are helping build an efficient, future-ready and environmentally responsible operating ecosystem.
