Nilgiris and Erode districts have recorded the highest number of piped natural gas supply to domestic consumers in Tamil Nadu, with a combined 41,999 households covered against a target of 0.884 million (mn) families as of December 2025. Pipeline laying in those districts has reached 1,205 km, representing 91 per cent of the planned 1,316 km. Coimbatore follows with 39,239 connections against a target of 0.912 mn households and about 2,500 km of pipeline laid, representing 81 per cent of the proposed 3,079 km.

In Chennai and Tiruvallur districts, 4,933 households have been provided connections out of a total target of 3.3 mn consumers, with pipeline laying reaching 2,868 km or 43 per cent of the planned 6,666 km. Across the state, around 0.132 mn households have been provided piped natural gas connections against a broader target of 23.6 mn until December 2025. Industry sources attributed delays in completing the network to slow issuance of road cutting permissions and the need to shift power and sewer lines.

The Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas informed the Lok Sabha that of the proposed 37,374 km of pipeline planned to expand piped natural gas supply, 19,080 km or 51 per cent has been completed. The minister added that of 2,825 compressed natural gas stations planned, 503 have been commissioned in the state up to December 2025. The coverage spans Tamil Nadu districts and the neighbouring Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh and Kolar district in Karnataka.

The deadline for achieving the connections target has been set as March 31, 2032, and projects are being implemented by companies authorised by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board. Officials said further progress will depend on coordination with local authorities to clear permissions and complete shifting of utilities. The data indicate steady progress in some districts while others lag behind planned pipeline work.
