Akasa Air and BPCL to Boost Sustainable Aviation Fuel Adoption

Akasa Air has signed a memorandum of understanding with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to accelerate the adoption of sustainable aviation fuel in India. The agreement sets out collaboration to strengthen the domestic SAF ecosystem and supports national decarbonisation goals while aligning with international aviation sustainability frameworks including the International Civil Aviation Organization's Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation.\n\nUnder the terms of the MoU, the partners will establish a framework for supply and offtake of SAF-blended aviation turbine fuel at designated airports across the country. The collaboration will prioritise long-term supply readiness by sharing indicative demand forecasts and supporting production planning. The organisations will work towards a phased increase in SAF blending as the domestic supply chain matures.\n\nBoth parties will support development of the SAF sector through knowledge sharing, policy advocacy and engagement with government and industry stakeholders. Akasa Air said sustainability is a core value informing decisions across operations and the airline intends to strengthen operational readiness for SAF through this partnership.\n\nBPCL described its commitment to providing comprehensive fuel solutions to the aviation sector through reliable supply, operational excellence and innovation, and noted digital transformation initiatives such as its automation platform Be-Winged to improve customer experience and operational efficiency. The company stated it is pursuing multiple green energy initiatives to support the aviation industry's decarbonisation journey.\n\nAkasa Air's Boeing 737 MAX fleet, powered by CFM International LEAP-1B engines and fitted with advanced winglets, reduces fuel use and emissions by 20 per cent compared with older aeroplanes. The carrier uses SkyBreathe fuel management analytics to cut carbon emissions and has voluntarily opted out of traditional water-cannon salutes at inaugurations, conserving 530,000 litres of water. The partnership is framed as support for the Government of India's energy transition.
