The Indian automobile industry recorded its best-ever August retail as alternative fuels such as compressed natural gas, hybrid and electric vehicles combined overtook petrol in the passenger vehicle segment for the first time. The shift coincided with oil price rises linked to the war in the Middle East and a cooled public response to higher ethanol content in petrol. Dealers attributed stronger demand to lower running costs and concerns over the E20 petrol transition.

Data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) showed total vehicle retail registrations in August 2026 were 2,423,201 units, a 17.51 per cent year-on-year increase. Month-on-month retail slipped 6.48 per cent owing to monsoon patterns and calendar shifts that moved festival buying into September. FADA said inventory and timing effects influenced the monthly outcome.

Passenger vehicle retail reached 402,398 units, a 16.14 per cent year-on-year rise, marking the four lakh milestone for the first time, equivalent to 0.4 million (mn) registrations. Within passenger vehicles, CNG accounted for 25.28 per cent, hybrids 9.04 per cent and electric vehicles 7.63 per cent. Total electric vehicle sales were 298,448 units, taking EV penetration to 12.3 per cent.

Rural passenger vehicle sales expanded 24.99 per cent compared with urban growth of 10.93 per cent. Inventory levels widened by five days from July to a range of 38 to 40 days, above the recommended 21-day level. FADA cautioned that showroom conversion during the September-to-November festive period will determine seasonal stability as dealers manage elevated stocks and scheduled price revisions. The association said conversion rates will be key to address oversupply risks.

FADA leadership described the structural powertrain shift as the defining feature of the month, noting alternative fuels combined reached 41.95 per cent against petrol’s 40.85 per cent after petrol had led by nearly 11 percentage points a little over a year earlier. Category results showed two-wheeler retail at 1,714,610 units up 19.69 per cent, commercial vehicles at 90,769 units up 14.45 per cent and wheeled construction equipment at 5,166 units up 31.45 per cent. Three-wheeler retail was 122,281 units up 8.64 per cent and tractors were 87,977 units, up 0.84 per cent despite a 25.03 per cent month-on-month decline amid a 13 per cent monsoon deficit across 14 states.
