EKI Energy Services Ltd (EKI), a global climate solutions provider, has been selected as the Carbon Consultant for the Varanasi Smart City Bio-Conversion Project—an initiative aimed at reducing methane emissions and advancing sustainable urban development.

Located in Shahanshahpur, the project uses anaerobic digestion technology to convert around 70 tonnes of animal waste and organic feedstock daily into clean energy and organic fertilisers. It has already prevented 2,806 tonnes of CO? equivalent emissions in its first monitoring period and is expected to reduce 33,187 tonnes over a seven-year crediting cycle.

The Chief Executive Officer of Varanasi Smart City Project, Akshat Verma, who is also the municipal commissioner of the city, lauded the efforts.

The project produces 2,500–2,800 kg of compressed biogas (CBG) daily, with by-products like fermented organic manure (FOM) and liquid fertiliser (LFOM) supporting sustainable agriculture. It has created over 25 direct and indirect jobs and contributes to India's Sustainable Development Goals under the SATAT initiative.

Developed in collaboration with the Adani Group, Gobardhan Varanasi Foundation SPV, and local authorities, the 25-year initiative is being positioned as a scalable model for smart cities integrating clean energy and circular economy solutions.
