GAIL India Exploring Stake in US LNG Project

GAIL India is evaluating three to four liquefaction and liquefied natural gas (LNG) export projects in the United States for a possible minority investment, according to industry executives familiar with the development. The review is part of the company’s effort to diversify its LNG portfolio and strengthen long-term supplies for India after disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz crisis.

GAIL is assessing nearly four US LNG export projects to secure long-term supply agreements and is open to becoming a minority partner in one of them. An investment would give the company a direct interest in an export project while supporting supply security for its domestic customers. The discussions are at an evaluation stage, and no investment decision has been announced.

The company has a diversified LNG portfolio of about 16.56 mn t per annum (MMTPA), with supplies sourced from international markets including the United States, Qatar and Australia. Additional US opportunities would broaden its sourcing base and reduce exposure to disruptions affecting individual markets or supply routes.

India’s natural gas demand is supported by fertiliser production, city gas distribution, power generation, refining and petrochemicals. Reliable long-term LNG supplies are therefore important for meeting industrial and commercial requirements, particularly as domestic consumption expands across these sectors.

A potential investment could combine upstream participation with long-term offtake arrangements, strengthening GAIL’s position across the global LNG supply chain. The structure, value and timing of any transaction remain undisclosed. GAIL did not respond to an email seeking comment by press time.
