Government Plans Levy On Gas To Fund Strategic Fuel Reserve

The central government is planning to levy a small tax on consumers of natural gas and cooking gas to help finance a proposed USD 42 bn strategic fuel reserve, according to sources privy to the development. The levy is intended to fund new storage infrastructure and enhance energy security after recent supply disruptions exposed vulnerabilities. The proposal remains under consideration across ministries and has not received final cabinet approval.
