Mizoram Renews Hydrocarbon Exploration Push with New Well Plan
Commerce, Industries, Geology and Mining Secretary H Lianzela discussed the plans at a review meeting attended by officials from the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Oil India (OIL) and Indradhanush Gas Grid (IGGL). The meeting reviewed field findings, ongoing exploration and proposals to identify prospective areas for future bidding under the Open Acreage Licensing Policy.
A key proposal is the drilling of an exploratory well near Hortoki in Kolasib district. The site is close to Meidum and about 2 km from the location where ONGC discovered gas during 2011-12. Preparatory work has advanced, with infrastructure along the Meidum-Hortoki road upgraded to support the movement of heavy drilling equipment. A bridge over the Chhimluang river was retrofitted in 2025 for the project.
ONGC began exploratory drilling in Mizoram in 2011 and drilled wells at Meidum and Zanlawn in Kolasib district. OIL has explored Aibawk near Aizawl, Keifang in Saitual district and Thenzawl in Serchhip district. ONGC has also sought an extension of its exploration block to enable drilling at Hortoki.
Officials called for exploration to expand into southern Mizoram, including the Rabung, Tlabung and Palzawng-Thiltlang sectors. They also discussed the proposed Panisagar-Sihhmui gas pipeline and the North East Gas Grid, which IGGL is implementing to connect major cities and support access to natural gas. The meeting highlighted better infrastructure, technology and inter-agency coordination as essential to determining the viability of the state's resources and supporting sustainable development.
