The Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) announced a significant step in its efforts to reduce carbon footprints by adopting cleaner fuel technologies in the state. The corporation, the largest government bus transport entity in Odisha, operates a fleet of more than 636 buses and plans to procure an additional 1745 buses.

Diptesh Kumar Pattnayak, Chairman Cum Managing Director of OSRTC, stated that they are on a mission not only to decrease carbon footprints but also to redefine the standards of excellence in the transport industry. He mentioned that around 38% of OSRTC's existing fleet is being upgraded with technology aimed at reducing carbon emissions. Additionally, the incorporation of 1745 Conventional Diesel Buses compliant with BS-VI Emission norms could result in an annual carbon reduction of about 11 million tons.

According to Pattnayak, OSRTC is continuously upgrading its current fleet with modern engines and emission control systems. By expanding the emission-efficient fleet to almost three times its current size, OSRTC aims to enhance air quality and align with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) parameters. To promote eco-driving practices, OSRTC has initiated training programs for drivers. Collaborations with five reputable body builders and an approved insurance partner have been established to ensure regular fleet maintenance, optimizing performance and managing emissions.

Regarding renewable energy, Pattnayak mentioned, "OSRTC is one of the few state transport corporations generating electricity using solar power on its rooftops, contributing clean energy to the Grid Corporation of Odisha."
