ORS Catalyst Boosts Methane Yield in CBG Production

Organic Recycling Systems Limited (ORS), a leading company in sustainable waste valorisation and bioenergy, has achieved a breakthrough in Compressed Biogas (CBG) technology with the validation of its MethanoBoost Catalyst (MBC) by the Sardar Swarn Singh National Institute of Bio-Energy (SSS-NIBE). The MBC, a proprietary catalyst enriched with nanoparticles, has demonstrated the ability to significantly enhance biomethane yield and process efficiency.
The validation confirms that the catalyst improves in-situ CO₂ methanation, increasing methane yield by up to 30 per cent while also stabilising process parameters such as redox conductivity, direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET), and pH buffering. Independent lab tests and pilot-scale trials have confirmed its role in enhancing biomethane generation and improving substrate-to-biogas conversion efficiency.
MBC’s dual benefits—higher biomethane yield and digestate enrichment—make it a transformative solution for integrated waste-to-bioenergy and biofertiliser applications. It has shown particular effectiveness with lignocellulosic feedstocks such as Napier grass and paddy straw. The improved methane generation not only raises plant profitability but also strengthens the sustainability of CBG operations.
Building on this success, ORS will now roll out demonstrations at select commercial CBG plants across India to assess scalability and long-term impact. According to Sarang Bhand, Managing Director of ORS, “The MBC is a pioneering step towards making CBG production more efficient, sustainable, and economically viable. This innovation will create a benchmark in the bioenergy sector and accelerate India’s transition to clean energy.”
The demonstrations will be conducted in collaboration with plant operators and technology partners, with an aim to integrate the catalyst into future projects. This initiative aligns with the Government of India’s National Bio-Energy Mission and the SATAT scheme, which targets the establishment of 5,000 CBG plants nationwide. By enabling higher biomethane yields, ORS’s innovation is expected to enhance the commercial viability of projects while advancing India’s energy security and climate goals.
