Adani Launches India's First Hydrogen Cargo Truck

The natural resources division of Adani Enterprises has flagged off what it claims to be India’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered truck, marking a major step toward cleaner and greener transportation in the logistics sector.

Launched in Raipur by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, the hydrogen truck will be deployed to transport coal from the Gare Pelma III block to a state-run power plant. The initiative is part of Adani’s broader plan to gradually phase out diesel vehicles across its logistics operations.

Developed through collaboration between Adani Natural Resources (ANR) and Adani New Industries Ltd (ANIL), the hydrogen-powered truck features smart technology and three hydrogen tanks. Each vehicle can carry up to 40 tonnes of cargo over a distance of 200 kilometres. ANR will procure hydrogen cells from ANIL, which also manufactures green hydrogen, wind turbines, solar modules, and batteries.

“This launch reflects Chhattisgarh’s commitment to sustainability,” said Chief Minister Sai. Vinay Prakash, CEO of ANR and Director at Adani Enterprises, noted that the initiative marks a key milestone in the Group’s mission to decarbonise its operations and promote responsible mining.

He added, “We are building model mines with low environmental impact using autonomous bulldozers, solar energy, digital systems, and equipment like tree transplanters.”

Hydrogen fuel cells emit only water vapour and warm air, producing no harmful emissions. These vehicles match diesel trucks in load capacity and range, with the added benefit of lower noise and a reduced carbon footprint.

The introduction of hydrogen-powered trucks underscores Adani’s effort to set new benchmarks in sustainable mining while ensuring reliable and affordable electricity across India.
