Adani Power has secured the Letter of Award (LoA) to establish a 2,400 MW greenfield ultra-supercritical thermal power plant in Pirpainti, Bhagalpur district, Bihar, with an investment of Rs 250 billion (approximately $3 billion). The long-term agreement spans 25 years, with electricity to be supplied to the Bihar State Power Generation Company Ltd (BSPGCL).

The project comprises three units of 800 MW each and will be executed under a Power Supply Agreement (PSA) signed with North Bihar and South Bihar Power Distribution Companies, represented by BSPGCL. Adani Power had earlier emerged as the lowest bidder in a competitive tariff-based process, quoting Rs 6.075 per kilowatt-hour.

“This project in Bihar sets new benchmarks in operational excellence and sustainability,” said S B Khyalia, CEO of Adani Power. The development is expected to create 10,000 to 12,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction, and 3,000 during the operational phase.

With India’s electricity demand forecast to grow from the current 250 GW to 400 GW by 2031–32, and surpassing 700 GW by 2047, thermal power remains central to the country’s energy strategy. The government has outlined plans to add 100 GW of thermal capacity by 2035.
