Bondada Engineering Limited, a Hyderabad-based engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company, has received a Letter of Intent (LOI) from Gujarat Industries Power Company Limited (GIPCL) for a 20 MW/120 MWh Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Energy Storage System (VRFB BESS). The project will be developed at GIPCL’s 165 MW natural gas power plant complex in Vadodara, Gujarat, and includes a 10-year operations and maintenance (O&M) contract.
Bondada Engineering said the project is India’s largest grid-scale VRFB energy storage system. It marks the company’s expansion into advanced energy storage technologies and adds to its renewable energy EPC portfolio.
The scope covers engineering, procurement and construction of the system, followed by 10 years of O&M. The project is scheduled for completion within 18 months of receipt of the Notice of Award.
Dr Bondada Raghavendra Rao, Chairman and Managing Director, Bondada Engineering, said, “This project marks an important step in our expansion into advanced energy storage solutions. As India increases its renewable energy capacity, energy storage will play a key role in ensuring reliable and efficient power supply. We are pleased to work with GIPCL on this project and look forward to strengthening our capabilities in long-duration energy storage while contributing to India’s clean energy goals.”
Vanadium redox flow batteries are gaining attention for long-duration energy storage, with the ability to store and discharge energy over extended periods. The Government of India has set a target of deploying approximately 236 GWh of battery energy storage systems by 2030.
The GIPCL project builds on Bondada Engineering’s experience with a 100 MWh VRFB energy storage system for NTPC Renewable Energy at Khavda, Gujarat. The company operates across renewable energy, telecommunications infrastructure and other EPC sectors."
