Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has commissioned a 71 megawatt (MW) solar power plant at Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh as part of its energy transition programme. The facility was inaugurated virtually by the union minister of petroleum and natural gas during India Energy Week and was presented as a step to expand BPCL's renewable footprint. The move is intended to support national clean energy ambitions and strengthen the company's sustainable operations.

The plant has an installed capacity of 71 megawatt peak DC and 52 megawatt alternating current and is expected to generate about 103.61 million (mn) units of green electricity annually. It is estimated to reduce carbon emissions by 75,150 metric tonne (t) per year, an environmental benefit equivalent to planting 12.5 million (mn) trees. The renewable output will be integrated into BPCL's energy supply to underpin refinery operations.

The project occupies 210 acres and was developed using 0.129 million (mn) solar modules supported by 1,324 metric tonne (t) of structural steel and roughly 294 kilometres of cabling infrastructure. The plant is connected to the grid through a 132 kV transmission line to ensure efficient transmission of generated power. The installation combines a mix of civil, electrical and structural works to deliver operational reliability.

The green energy from the Prayagraj plant will be supplied to BPCL refineries in Mumbai, Bina and Kochi to contribute to lower carbon intensity across refinery operations. The initiative reflects BPCL's focus on integrating renewable energy into core business activities while pursuing energy efficiency and responsible growth. The company has reaffirmed its commitment to advance its sustainability roadmap and to aim for net zero energy company status by 2040 in Scope one and Scope two emissions.
