BSES Solar Rooftop Saves Rs 160 Crore Yearly in Delhi

BSES has surpassed a significant milestone by energising more than 10,000 rooftop solar net metering connections across Delhi, achieving a sanctioned capacity nearing 220 MWp. This move is driving substantial consumer savings of nearly Rs 1.6 billion annually, while also accelerating Delhi’s green energy transition.
The residential segment leads with around 6,900 connections, followed by commercial (1,771), educational institutions (1,000), industries (165), and others (240). In terms of connected load, commercial consumers top the list with 81 MWp, ahead of residential (64 MWp) and educational (50 MWp). Over 125 Cooperative Group Housing Societies have also embraced solar, contributing 5.5 MWp.
A domestic user with a 10 kW system can save about Rs 86,400 annually, with investment recovery in 3–4 years. Schemes such as the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and Delhi Solar Policy are fuelling adoption through capital subsidies up to Rs 108,000, generation-based incentives, and low-interest loans requiring just 10 per cent upfront.
The Hybrid RESCO model, allowing zero upfront costs with pay-as-you-generate billing, is another enabler. Segment-wise annual savings include Rs 760 million (commercial), Rs 330 million (residential), Rs 280 million (educational), Rs 100 million (industrial), and Rs 80 million (others).
BSES’ “Solar City” initiative spans South, West, East, and Central Delhi, supporting with consumer education, financing options, and technical guidance. Net metering capacities now range from 1 kW to 4,000 kW, with nearly 90 per cent of consumers preferring the Capex ownership model.
Rooftop solar continues to emerge as a cost-effective, sustainable solution reshaping Delhi’s energy consumption patterns.
