The Government has recently outlined several measures being taken to reduce power transmission losses, which currently range between 3 and 4 per cent nationwide. According to the Central Electricity Authority’s latest review, transmission losses during 2023–24 were 3.15 per cent in the Northern Region, 3.12 per cent in the Western Region, 3.46 per cent in the Southern Region, 4.24 per cent in the Eastern Region and 3.89 per cent in the North Eastern Region.

To address these losses, Central and State Transmission Utilities are undertaking network expansion, system augmentation and the adoption of higher voltage systems. Efforts also include improved reactive power management, better operational practices, and modernisation through technologies such as SCADA and Energy Management Systems.

The Government is supporting States through schemes including Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana, Integrated Power Development Scheme and the SAUBHAGYA initiative to ensure reliable electricity supply for households.
