Concord Control Systems Wins NTPC Order for Hydrogen Locomotive

Concord Control Systems has recently secured a major order from NTPC for the development of the world’s largest 3,100 HP hydrogen-fuelled locomotive propulsion system. The Rs 470 million work order has been awarded to Concord’s wholly owned subsidiary, Advance Rail Controls, marking a global first in high-horsepower hydrogen rail technology.

The project involves converting a diesel locomotive into a hydrogen-powered unit, representing the highest-ever horsepower conversion globally. Designed as a commercially deployable solution rather than a pilot prototype, the propulsion system is aimed at demonstrating hydrogen’s real-world viability for heavy-duty freight operations.

This milestone places India at the forefront of zero-emission rail innovation, far exceeding the earlier global benchmark of 1,600 HP for hydrogen rail systems. The initiative aligns with Indian Railways’ target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 and supports the country’s broader focus on green hydrogen, clean mobility and sustainable infrastructure under the Make in India programme.

Beyond domestic deployment, the project is expected to strengthen India’s position as a global hub for next-generation railway technology, opening opportunities for international collaboration and exports across hydrogen-powered rail systems.

Company Quote: “At Concord, we are proud to pioneer the world’s first 3,100 HP hydrogen locomotive propulsion system for the Public Sector giant NTPC on this nationally significant green hydrogen initiative. As a research-backed railway technology company, our conviction is to push the boundaries of innovation, and our promise is to deliver propulsion systems that meaningfully advance the global journey towards zero emissions,” said Gaurav Lath, Joint Managing Director, Concord Control Systems.
