Dredging Corporation of India Limited (DCIL) has commissioned a 150 kilowatt (kW) solar rooftop plant at its head office in Visakhapatnam as part of renewable energy initiatives under the Government of India’s PM Surya Ghar Yojana. The plant was commissioned by the managing director and chief executive officer, Captain S. Divakar. The project aims to reduce carbon emissions and improve operational efficiency. The installation represents a visible step in the organisation's decarbonisation agenda.

DCIL said the solar plant is expected to generate around 750 units of clean energy per day, nearly 22,500 units per month and about 270,000 units annually, or roughly 0.27 million (mn) units a year. The company estimated that monthly savings would be nearly Rs 2.5 lakh, amounting to around Rs 30 lakh a year, equivalent to about Rs 0.25 million (mn) per month and Rs 3 million (mn) annually. The firm outlined that these savings will contribute to lower operating costs and support sustainability targets. The estimates will be verified during routine audits.

DCIL reported that the project would help avoid an estimated 220 to 240 tonnes (t) of carbon dioxide emissions every year. The corporation indicated that the rooftop installation will integrate with existing electrical systems to supply a portion of daytime demand and reduce grid dependency. Officials noted that the initiative forms part of a broader push by the organisation to adopt renewable energy across its facilities. Timelines will be shared later.

The plant is among several measures being pursued to meet environmental commitments and enhance energy efficiency at government-linked enterprises. DCIL signalled that further assessments will determine potential expansion of rooftop capacity at other sites. The commissioning is expected to be monitored for performance and accounting of actual generation and savings. Performance data will be used to inform future energy planning across the region.
