Farmers Use Diesel Generators amid Power Cuts in Nalgonda

Farmers in the erstwhile Nalgonda district are using diesel generators to irrigate standing crops amid inadequate electricity supply, increasing cultivation costs and raising concerns about crop losses. Farmers in Suryapet and Yadadri-Bhongir districts have urged the Telangana government to restore reliable power to agricultural connections.

Farmers who do not have access to wells or canals are already depending on water tankers to irrigate their fields. Those with wells are now being forced to operate diesel generators because electricity is insufficient to run borewells and pumps, adding to the financial burden during a critical stage of cultivation.

The problem has been reported in several mandals of Suryapet and Yadadri-Bhongir districts. In Bollampally mandal of Suryapet, farmers are using generators to protect standing crops, while similar conditions have been reported in Kalmalacheruvu village of Gareddipally mandal.

Farmers in the affected areas said they had no alternative because the wells in their fields could not be used without electricity. They said generators were being operated as a last resort to supply water and prevent crops from drying before harvesting begins.

Representatives of the Telangana Farmers Federation have appealed to the government to ensure quality power for another 15 to 20 days. They said the crops were at a critical stage and that any interruption in irrigation could cause substantial losses to farmers. The situation has also drawn attention because Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy comes from the erstwhile Nalgonda district. Farmers are seeking immediate intervention to stabilise supply and protect crops nearing harvest.
