Indian Institute of Technology Indore (IIT Indore) said the foundation stone for a one megawatt (MW) solar power plant was laid on Monday at its Indore campus. The project is being developed on a three point one five acre plot and will supply renewable energy to the institute. The institute indicated the installation is part of its ongoing efforts to increase on-site clean energy generation. The installation will be tied into the campus electrical system and is intended to reduce reliance on externally sourced power during daylight hours.

The release said once operational the plant would lead to savings of approximately Rs seven point five million (mn) annually in electricity bills. The figure was presented as an estimate of reduced operational costs and aligned with institutional sustainability goals. The report added that the plant will contribute to reduced grid dependence and a lower carbon footprint. The facility is also expected to provide practical learning opportunities for students and a platform for faculty-led research on solar technologies.

The ceremony was chaired by Dr K Sivan, chairperson of the Board of Governors of IIT Indore, who also laid the foundation stone for a 63,840 square foot Kendriya Vidyalaya building on the campus. Dr Sivan, who previously headed the Indian Space Research Organisation, inaugurated a research complex reported to be spread over 1,662 square feet.

The research complex will include 10 advanced laboratories designed to support high-level scientific work and collaborative projects. The complex is estimated to cost approximately Rs 118 mn and is expected to provide a conducive environment for research and development. The institute presented the developments as part of a broader push to strengthen infrastructure and academic resources. Officials noted the upgrades are intended to enhance the institute's capacity to undertake multidisciplinary projects and to attract collaborative funding for advanced studies.
