Government Plans ALMM for Solar Inverters to Boost Domestic Manufacturing

The government is working towards introducing an Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for solar inverters, expanding its efforts to strengthen India’s solar manufacturing ecosystem, New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi announced.

Speaking at the 6th CII International Energy Conference and Exhibition, the minister said, “I have asked my officials to come up with ALMM for solar inverters. We are also discussing a Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for advanced chemistry cells.”

A solar inverter converts direct current (DC) generated by solar panels into alternating current (AC). The government had earlier launched ALMM for solar photovoltaic (PV) modules, followed by a list for solar cells that will come into effect from June 2026. Work is also underway to prepare a similar framework for wafers, ingots, and polysilicon.

Joshi added, “We have already set a target to achieve domestically manufactured solar cells by 2028, and we are now moving towards a comprehensive indigenous wafers and ingots ecosystem (Swadeshi). I have also directed my ministry to prepare a trajectory for domestic polysilicon production, ensuring a fully integrated solar value chain.”

As part of its clean energy push, India has already achieved 250 GW of non-fossil fuel-based power generation capacity and aims to expand this to 500 GW by 2030 in line with its 2070 net-zero target.

To accelerate renewable energy deployment, MNRE will soon hold a second round of discussions with states on energy storage, energy transition, and power purchase agreements.

A joint report by CII and EY released at the conference highlighted that non-fossil energy sources would need to grow 40 times their current level to meet at least two-thirds of India’s primary energy demand by 2047 under the Viksit Bharat vision.
