Gujarat Records Peak Power Demand as Supply Tightens

Gujarat recorded its highest-ever peak electricity demand at 29,822 MW on Friday, prompting the state government to arrange emergency power procurement, optimise solar generation and urge consumers to reduce evening usage. The peak was 36.6 per cent higher than the 21,822 MW recorded in October last year.

Daily electricity consumption reached 574 mn units on October 16, up 27 per cent from 457 mn units during the corresponding period last year. Energy Minister Rushikesh Patel and Minister of State for Energy Kaushik Vekariya reviewed grid stability with senior officials and utility representatives as demand rose by nearly 12 per cent, or about 4,000 MW, across September and October.

Officials attributed the increase to high temperatures after a weak monsoon, agricultural irrigation, stronger industrial activity before the festive season and lower generation from hydroelectric and wind projects. Agriculture accounts for peak demand of up to 12,000 MW, while poor rainfall and subdued wind speeds have reduced renewable and hydroelectric output.

The state is coordinating with the Union Coal Ministry to maintain fuel supplies to Gujarat State Electricity Corporation and has secured additional electricity from central and regional grids. It will draw 379 MW from NTPC’s Farakka plant in November, 500 MW from Assam’s central allocation and another 500 MW from the Centre’s unallocated pool. Market purchases have been arranged for 2,990 MW in October, 1,740 MW in November and 1,335 MW in December.

Gujarat is scheduling agricultural supply during daylight hours to use its nearly 12,000 MW solar capacity, but faces its sharpest grid pressure between 5 pm and 11 pm. Battery Energy Storage Systems capacity currently stands at 192 MW, while contracts for 2,742 MW, equal to 5,517 MWh, have been finalised. Long-term plans include an 800 MW Ukai thermal unit, new thermal capacity, a 4,200 MW nuclear project with NPCIL and additional central allocations through 2032.
