IEX Electricity Trading Hits Record 13.94 Billion Units in August

Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) recorded its highest monthly electricity trading volume in August, with 13.94 billion units (bn units), up 20.2 per cent from a year earlier. The increase accompanied a 12.85 per cent year on year rise in national electricity consumption to 169.01 billion units. The exchange attributed the gain to higher demand that lifted activity across several trading segments.

Buy bids in the Day-Ahead Market rose 61.7 per cent, while the average market clearing price increased 22 per cent to Rs 4.88 per unit, reflecting tighter supply conditions. The average price in the Real-Time Market rose 30.4 per cent to Rs 4.41 per unit. The higher price signal encouraged more short term purchases on the exchange.

The Day-Ahead Market, including the High Price Day-Ahead Market, traded 5,517 million units (mn units) in August, a rise of 15 per cent from 4,797 million units a year earlier. Real-Time Market volumes increased 10.6 per cent to 5,565 million units, or about 5.56 bn units, from 5,029 million units in August 2025. The Day-Ahead Contingency and Term-Ahead Market more than doubled to 1,765 million units from 835 million units, an increase of 111.3 per cent, indicating stronger demand for shorter term purchases.

Trading in the Green Day-Ahead and Green Term-Ahead markets expanded 17.3 per cent to 1,091 million units from 930 million units, and the weighted average Green Day-Ahead price rose 5.1 per cent to Rs 3.92 per unit. Renewable Energy Certificate trading fell sharply to 0.291 million (mn) certificates, a decline of 86.6 per cent, which the exchange linked to lower participation. Market structure remains under scrutiny after the Supreme Court declined to halt the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission's market coupling process on August three, allowing CERC to proceed with framing regulations. IEX had argued that market coupling could hurt the commercial position of power exchanges and was told it could contest any notified regulations later.
