India added 3.8 gigawatt (GW) of solar open-access capacity in the first half (H1) of 2025, down slightly from 3.9 GW in H1 2024, according to Mercom data. Cumulative solar open access stood at 24.6 GW by June 2025.
In Q2 2025, additions touched 2.7 GW, led by Maharashtra with over 30% share. Karnataka continued to lead in overall cumulative capacity with 24%, followed by Maharashtra (18%) and Tamil Nadu (12%). The pipeline of projects under development and pre-construction stood at over 31 GW.
Meanwhile, rooftop solar capacity surged 158% YoY to 2.8 GW in H1 2025, with cumulative installations reaching 16.5 GW. The growth was fuelled by residential demand, delayed project clearances, and enhancements to the PM Suryaghar portal. In Q2, rooftop solar additions reached 1.6 GW, dominated by the residential segment at 74%.
