India and UK launch workstream to promote industrial energy efficiency
Chile is organising the 12th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) in virtual mode from May 31-June 6, the ministry said.
This year, India and the United Kingdom launched a new workstream to promote industrial energy efficiency under the CEM's IDDI coordinated by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).
According to the ministry, the goal of the new collaboration is to infuse green technologies and boost demand for low-carbon industrial material. The IDDI initiative has been supported by Canada and Germany, with more countries expected to join soon.
Last month, India and the UK agreed on a joint roadmap for climate action by 2030 in a virtual meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
The partnership includes new collaboration on clean energy transition and protecting forests and joint leadership to develop resilient infrastructure in climate vulnerable countries.
Power Secretary Alok Kumar said that India is committed to reducing emissions intensity per unit of GDP by 33-35% by 2030.
The commitment hinges on the effective deployment of low carbon technologies in energy-intensive sectors like iron and steel, cement and petrochemicals. He elaborated that government policies have resulted in substantial savings in energy on the demand side.
