India is likely to fall short of its target of achieving 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) of annual green hydrogen production capacity by 2030 due to global uncertainties, a senior government official has said.

The target was set under the National Green Hydrogen Mission launched in 2023. Speaking at the 3rd International Green Hydrogen Conference, Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), said, “We may slip on the target of reaching 5 MMT by 2030.” He added that India is now expected to meet this milestone by 2032.

Sarangi noted that the country may reach around 3 MMT of annual green hydrogen production capacity by 2030.

Discussing India’s broader renewable energy goals, he highlighted the need to add at least 50 GW of capacity each year to achieve the target of 500 GW of green energy by 2030. He said India will prioritise the 40 GW of renewable capacity already awaiting the signing of power purchase and sale agreements.

He also pointed out that a pipeline of nearly 160 GW of renewable energy projects is currently in various stages of implementation.

According to sector estimates, India must sustain annual additions of 50 GW to meet its 2030 renewable energy commitment.
