India added over 800 MW of wind power capacity in the fourth quarter (Q4) of calendar year (CY) 2024, up 45.1% year-over-year (YoY) from 551 MW. The capacity additions surged 13.3% quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) from 706.6 MW, according to Mercom India Research. 

Increasing demand for wind-solar hybrid power and improvement in the wind turbine supply chain with project developers undertaking construction and erection activities reduced commissioning timelines. The increased focus of commercial and industrial (C&I) consumers on meeting corporate sustainability goals further drove the installations in the quarter. 

A significant increase in auctioned wind projects and increasing demand for hybrid, firm, and despatchable renewable energy (FDRE) and round-the-clock (RTC) by C&I consumers and distribution companies (DISCOMs) will likely see more wind installations in the coming quarters. 

Recently, Corcord Biotech signed an agreement for renewable power from a 9.9 MW wind-solar hybrid power project. Bharti Airtel announced that it would procure power from a 50 MW wind-solar hybrid power project in Rajasthan. 

Tamil Nadu led the installations in Q4, adding 366.6 MW. Gujarat, Karnataka, and Maharashtra added 264.6 MW, 166.9 MW, and 2.1 MW, respectively.
