India’s largest hydropower project — the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydro Electric Project — has commenced trial operations, marking a major step towards full-scale commissioning. Developed by NHPC on the Subansiri River along the Arunachal Pradesh–Assam border, the project will play a key role in strengthening the North-East’s renewable energy capacity.

The test run involved the first generating unit, with full commissioning expected in phases over the coming months. Once operational, the project will generate around 7,500 million units of electricity annually, contributing to regional power stability and national clean energy goals.

Spread across Gerukamukh in Assam and Lower Subansiri district in Arunachal Pradesh, the Rs 200 billion project faced several delays due to environmental and safety concerns. With these issues resolved, NHPC has emphasised strict adherence to safety and ecological guidelines.

The project is expected to accelerate socio-economic growth in the North-East, creating employment and supporting infrastructure development in the region.
