India’s power consumption declined by 6 per cent to 132 billion units (BU) in October 2025 from 140.47 BU in the same month last year, primarily due to milder weather and reduced use of cooling appliances.

Experts attributed the drop to unseasonal rainfall in several regions and the early onset of winter, which kept temperatures lower than usual and curbed the need for air-conditioning and refrigeration.

The peak power demand met during October stood at 210.71 GW, compared with 219.22 GW in October 2024. In contrast, the all-time high peak demand of 250 GW was recorded in May 2024, surpassing the previous record of 243.27 GW in September 2023.

Earlier this year, during the summer months, India’s power demand touched 242.77 GW in June amid soaring temperatures and high cooling loads.

Industry experts expect demand to remain subdued in November as temperatures moderate further, leading to lower electricity use in residential and commercial sectors.

Despite the short-term dip, officials noted that annual power consumption remains on an upward trajectory, driven by industrial recovery, infrastructure growth, and rising electrification across India.
