The Government of Uttar Pradesh on Monday said the upcoming Noida International Airport at Jewar will be anchored by a large solar park and extensive electric vehicle infrastructure as part of its green development strategy.

According to an official statement, the airport will feature a solar park spread across 82.94 acres with a generation capacity of 51,966 megawatt-hours. Electric vehicle charging facilities will be provided across around 20 per cent of the parking area, while all vehicles used for airside operations will be 100 per cent electric and supported by multiple charging points across the campus.

The state government said the airport is being developed on a net-zero concept in collaboration with Zurich Airport International AG and has already become India’s first airport campus to receive certification from the Indian Green Building Council.

The terminal building has been designed to minimise consumption of energy, water and other resources. Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority additional chief executive officer Shailendra Kumar Bhatia said standard and fast EV charging stations will be installed to encourage clean mobility among passengers and airport users.

The project also includes two rainwater harvesting ponds to create sustainable water sources, along with a planned renewable natural gas plant to operate airport vehicles, diesel generator sets and other systems using green fuel. A comprehensive solid waste management system will ensure segregation, recycling and scientific treatment of waste.

An environmental monitoring plan has been prepared under which air, water, soil, waste and sewage parameters will be tracked on a monthly basis, the statement said.

The government added that the airport will not only improve air connectivity but also set new benchmarks in green infrastructure, while generating investment and employment in line with the vision of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for sustainable development.

The greenfield airport is being developed under a public–private partnership model, with Zurich Airport International AG as the concessionaire. Located in Jewar in Gautam Buddh Nagar district, around 75 km from Delhi, the airport was initially scheduled to begin commercial operations in September 2024 in its first phase, but operations are yet to commence.
