The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has taken a major step toward its goal of transforming the twin cities into a ‘Solar City’ with the installation of its first advanced solar-powered high-mast light at Ganpati Chowk, Kalyan (West).

The project, led by Prashant Bhagwat, Additional City Engineer (Electrical and Mechanical Department), represents a milestone in KDMC’s push for sustainable and energy-efficient urban infrastructure. The Rs 0.75 million solar lighting system was provided free of cost by Philips India as part of a pilot initiative.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Deputy Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Jadhav, Additional Engineer Prashant Bhagwat, Philips India National Head Srikant Phanse, Executive Engineer Jitendra Shinde, and Deputy Executive Engineer Bhagwat Patil.

Bhagwat explained that the installation would ensure uninterrupted street lighting even during power cuts or technical faults, which often leave parts of the city in darkness. “This initiative enhances citizen safety, particularly at night, and helps prevent crimes that occur during blackouts,” he said.

Unlike conventional lighting systems, the newly installed solar-powered high-mast provides brighter illumination and can operate continuously for up to two days on a single charge — even without sunlight. Bhagwat added that the system will help conserve electricity and reduce the city’s dependence on traditional power sources.

Encouraged by the success of this pilot installation, KDMC plans to expand the deployment of solar-powered high-masts across Kalyan-Dombivli, promoting clean energy adoption and ensuring safer, well-lit streets for residents.
