LANXESS Cuts Emissions with Hydropower Supply from VERBUND

Specialty chemicals company LANXESS recently signed a three-year agreement with VERBUND for the supply of green electricity from hydropower plants in Bavaria, Germany, supporting its transition towards climate-neutral production.

Under the agreement, VERBUND will supply around 200,000 MWh of renewable electricity from 2026 to 2028 to LANXESS production sites in Bergkamen, Bitterfeld, Brunsbüttel, Mannheim and Wietmarschen. Compared to the German electricity mix, the switch is expected to reduce CO? emissions by around 60,000 tonnes, lowering the carbon footprint of LANXESS operations and products from these sites.

LANXESS said the partnership supports its goal of achieving climate neutrality in production by 2040, with plans to extend decarbonisation across its entire value chain by 2050. The company’s targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative and align with the 1.5°C pathway of the Paris Climate Agreement.

VERBUND operates 22 run-of-river hydropower plants in Bavaria and along the Bavarian–Austrian border, with ongoing investments to strengthen renewable energy capacity and ecological protection. The collaboration reflects growing industrial demand for reliable, sustainable power while supporting Europe’s broader energy transition.
