Modi Dedicates 660 MW Ghatampur Power Unit to Nation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, 30 May 2025, dedicated Unit I of the Ghatampur Thermal Power Project in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur Nagar district to the nation. Developed by Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL)—a joint venture between NLC India Limited (51 per cent) and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (49 per cent)—the plant marks a major step forward in strengthening the region's electricity supply.

The project comprises three supercritical thermal units of 660 MW each, bringing the total installed capacity to 1,980 MW. The first unit is now operational, while the remaining two are scheduled for commissioning during the 2025–26 financial year.

With a total investment of Rs 217.81 billion, the project is designed to address the growing power demand in Uttar Pradesh and other Indian states, while ensuring reliable and sustainable electricity generation. A total of 998.81 hectares of land was acquired for the facility.

Equipped with state-of-the-art environmental technologies, the plant features Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) systems to reduce nitrogen and sulphur oxide emissions. It also operates on a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system, ensuring that no wastewater is released from the site.

To enhance water conservation, the project includes 288 km of canal lining to prevent seepage, saving an estimated 195 million litres of water per day. Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) and Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (AAQMS) have also been installed to track environmental parameters in real time.

This strategic power initiative is expected to significantly boost energy availability in the region while aligning with India's long-term goals of sustainable infrastructure development and environmental compliance.
