NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) signed a memorandum of understanding with Assago Industries Private Limited (Assago) for the supply of green ammonia, carbon dioxide, renewable energy power and other related utilities to support production of 1,000 tonnes (t) per day of green urea. The MoU was executed on second February 2026 at NTPC Bhawan in New Delhi. The urea plant is being explored for development at the NGEL Green Hydrogen Hub at Pudimadaka near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The MoU includes joint studies on technical feasibility, site infrastructure and regulatory compliance.

NGEL, a subsidiary of NTPC Limited, will work with Assago to provide green feedstocks and utilities required for plant operations and logistics. The agreement envisages supply of green ammonia, carbon dioxide and renewable electricity alongside other services to enable sustained production. The parties will collaborate on engineering, procurement and supply chain arrangements while progressing technical studies. Scope of collaboration will also cover storage, transport and grid integration studies to ensure reliable supply.

The signing took place in the presence of senior officials from NGEL, NTPC and Assago, and represents a strategic step towards decarbonising fertiliser manufacture. The initiative advances efforts to develop integrated green hydrogen hubs and circular value chains for low carbon chemicals. It is positioned to support regional industrial decarbonisation and to attract additional investment into renewable energy and hydrogen infrastructure. Stakeholder consultations and capacity building for local workforce will form part of preparatory activities.

NGEL and Assago will continue with feasibility assessments, regulatory clearances and commercial negotiations to finalise project timelines and offtake arrangements. The collaboration is expected to accelerate development of low carbon ammonia and urea supply chains in India. Further operational and financial details will be announced as project studies reach completion. Plans for financing, offtake commitments and detailed project schedules will be developed as studies progress.
