NTPC REL Secures 500 MW Peak Power Contract From SECI

NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Green Energy Limited, has secured a 500 MW contract in a competitive auction conducted by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). The award was made under SECI’s competitive tariff based bidding process identified as SECI-FDRE-IX and the procurement was for assured peak power from Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) connected renewable energy projects across India. The successful outcome follows participation in an e-reverse auction process held on August 21, 2026.

The tender covered a total assured peak power requirement of 1,500 MW for four hours, equivalent to 6,000 MWh, designed to bolster reliable renewable supply during periods of peak demand. Megawatt (MW) and megawatt hour (MWh) units are used to quantify capacity and energy in the contract, while kilowatt hour (kWh) is the basis for the tariff. The procurement mechanism aims to support integration of renewable energy into the national grid by ensuring availability when variability from solar and wind is highest.

NTPC REL secured 500 MW of the contracted capacity at a discovered tariff of Rs six per kilowatt hour (kWh), adding to NTPC Green Energy's expanding portfolio of utility scale solar and wind assets. The award will be folded into the company's pipeline of peak power projects that combine renewable generation with assured supply arrangements to meet short term system needs. The capacity addition is expected to strengthen the company's position in India's rapidly developing renewable energy market.

Peak power contracts of this design are becoming an important element of system planning as India installs large volumes of variable solar and wind capacity and seeks to maintain grid reliability. By securing assured supply from ISTS connected projects, developers and procurers aim to reduce exposure to intra day variability and support smoother balancing. The NTPC REL award signals continued investor and developer focus on structured products that deliver renewable energy during critical demand windows.
