The Panchayati Raj Ministry has urged states to expedite the implementation of the rooftop solar scheme to enhance energy access and sustainability in rural areas. This initiative aims to leverage decentralised solar energy solutions to provide reliable and cost-effective electricity to rural households and community buildings.

In a recent communication to state governments, the ministry emphasised the critical role of local governance bodies, or Panchayats, in driving the adoption of rooftop solar systems. By actively participating in the scheme, Panchayats can significantly contribute to India's renewable energy goals and promote sustainable development at the grassroots level.

The rooftop solar scheme, part of the broader National Solar Mission, offers financial incentives and subsidies to households and institutions for installing solar panels. This not only reduces electricity costs but also helps in mitigating the carbon footprint by transitioning to clean energy sources.

The ministry highlighted several benefits of the scheme, including energy security, reduced dependence on grid power, and economic savings for rural communities. Additionally, it stressed the importance of creating awareness and providing technical support to ensure the successful deployment of solar installations.

States have been encouraged to streamline the approval process, simplify regulations, and provide necessary infrastructure to facilitate the adoption of rooftop solar systems. The ministry also suggested organising training programs and workshops for local officials and stakeholders to build capacity and technical expertise in managing solar projects.
