PIB Clears Rs 260.7bn Kamala Hydro Project

The Public Investment Board on Thursday approved an expenditure of about Rs 260.70 billion for the proposed 1,720 MW Kamala hydroelectric project in Arunachal Pradesh, according to a source.

Once completed, the project is expected to generate around 6,869.92 million units of green energy annually, supporting India’s energy transition initiatives and the government’s Net Zero emissions target by 2070, the source said.

The Kamala hydroelectric project is a storage-based scheme with a flood moderation component. It is proposed on the Kamala River, a major tributary of the Subansiri River, and will be located across the Kamle, Kra Daadi and Kurung Kumey districts of Arunachal Pradesh.

The project is expected to play a dual role by strengthening renewable energy capacity in the north-eastern region while also contributing to flood management and grid stability through its storage-based design.
