PM Surya Ghar Mission Directorate to boost rooftop solar adoption

The Government of India, under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, has officially established a Mission Directorate to oversee the implementation of the ?PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana?, an ambitious initiative aimed at installing rooftop solar plants in 10 million households. This significant development was confirmed through a recent office memorandum issued on May 29, 2024. The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which received administrative approval on February 29, 2024, involves a substantial financial outlay of Rs. 750.21 billion. This initiative forms part of the government's broader strategy to enhance the adoption of renewable energy across the nation and is scheduled to commence operations in March 2024.

The newly established Mission Directorate, operating within the Ministry?s Rooftop Solar Division, will be led by a Mission Director who will be responsible for the day-to-day management and strategic implementation of the scheme. This includes issuing detailed guidelines, coordinating with state and national program implementation agencies, and overseeing financial management and resource distribution necessary for the scheme's success. Furthermore, the Directorate is tasked with ensuring effective coordination among various stakeholders, including state governments and private agencies, to facilitate smooth and efficient implementation. Regular monitoring and evaluation of the scheme's progress are also mandated to align with the set objectives.

The establishment of the Mission Directorate marks a crucial step in realising India?s renewable energy goals and underscores the government's commitment to increasing the nation's energy security and reducing dependency on non-renewable sources through sustainable practices. (Source: ET Energy)
