Power Grid Acquires Barmer HVDC Power Transmission Project
The project will evacuate 6 GW of solar power from the Rajasthan renewable energy zone Phase IV, Part 5, known as the Barmer Complex. It will be developed on a build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) basis, with the SPV acquired from REC Power Development and Consultancy, the bid process coordinator for the project.
The planned infrastructure includes 6,000 MW, 800 kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) terminals at Barmer-II in Rajasthan and South Kalamb in Maharashtra. The scope also includes augmentation of the South Kalamb substation and the construction of an approximately 1,000 km, 800 kV HVDC bipole transmission line connecting the two locations.
The transmission line will pass through Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra. The project also covers the construction of 400 kV transmission lines in Rajasthan, associated bays and other linked facilities. Two synchronous condenser units, known as SynCon units, will be installed at the Barmer-II pooling station along with their associated bays.
The transmission system is intended to support the evacuation of renewable power from the Barmer-II solar complex to the receiving network in Maharashtra. Power Grid’s acquisition of the project SPV gives it responsibility for implementing the planned terminals, transmission corridors, substations and associated equipment under the awarded transmission scheme. The project forms part of the wider inter-State network being developed to connect renewable energy generation in Rajasthan with demand centres outside the state.
