Power Mech Unit Wins 1 GWh BESS Order In Bengal

Power Mech Projects Limited on Friday said its subsidiary PM Green Private Limited has secured a 1 GWh Battery Energy Storage System contract from West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited.

In a press release, the company said PM Green has been awarded a 250 MW / 1,000 MWh BESS project under the Build, Own, Operate model, with a 100 per cent off-take guarantee from WBSEDCL. The tender, issued in October 2025 by the Department of Power, Government of West Bengal, was awarded within two months.

The scope of work includes the design, financing, engineering, procurement, construction, operation and maintenance of the BESS facility at the Goaltore Substation in Paschim Midnapore district. The contract also carries a greenshoe option for an additional 250 MW / 1,000 MWh capacity, proposed to be set up at the Durgapur Project Limited campus in Durgapur.

According to the tender conditions, the project is expected to be completed within 18 months from the signing of the Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement. This was the second BESS tender floated by WBSEDCL to ensure continuous availability of 1,000 MWh of storage capacity, enabling one full cycle of charging and discharging operations for on-demand usage.

The BESS will be integrated with the state’s distribution network at the Goaltore Substation under a tariff-based competitive bidding framework. The contract period is 15 years, with a provision for extension of up to five years from the scheduled commissioning date. Including the greenshoe option, the project is expected to generate revenue of about Rs 31.26 billion over the contract period.

The project aligns with West Bengal’s Resource Adequacy Plan, which envisages a sharp increase in battery storage capacity from zero at present to 1,590 MW by 2030, and further to 3,219 MW by 2034–35. The planned capacity addition is expected to play a crucial role in balancing the grid, addressing the intermittency of solar and wind power, and ensuring reliable electricity supply during peak demand and non-solar hours.
